TailGauge Product Uses and General Questions

Why backup cameras
are not the best backup safety solution.
Contrary to the common wisdom, cameras are not the best backup safety
solution. However, they can be a useful supplement to a proactive
system that actually warns the driver.
Although people tend to be more comfortable believing what they can
actually see, cameras have two major shortfalls:
-
They do not actively warn the driver of an obstacle (or person!)
behind the vehicle.
-
They don’t provide an accurate reading of distance. In fact, due to
wide angle lenses used in most cameras, the distance shown may
actually be quite different from what the driver THINKS he (or she)
sees.
TailGauge backup warning systems show the exact distance to the
obstacle, (accurate to within 1 inch!) while actively warning the
driver; a significantly better defense against backup accidents. They
actually eliminate blind zones.
TailGauge has developed the most accurate, most reliable backup
warning systems available. This is not a boast, it is a fact. They
combine distance readings accurate to within 1", reliability and
resistance to ‘falsing’. And the addition of a rear view camera
(should you desire it) can be a very useful supplement to our
proactive system.

How many different backup devices do you make?
TailGauge currently makes
several different backup devices. Some for
Consumer use
and some for
Industrial/Commercial use.
Please note: Our Model V and V-SA systems (systems with displays)
are no longer available as consumer kits.
Systems with an LED display are now only available as Industrial kits.
Are these backup systems used mainly as backup warning devices or do they have other uses?
Yes, most people first find us when they are looking for a backup warning
system. However, after they see how well TailGauge works and the many
useful features we have added to our systems, people now use them to aid
in parallel parking (customers rave about this), hooking up and
manoeuvring their trailers, and parking in car garages, to name a few.
Families with children depend on TailGauge to help protect their kids. In
fact, when we came out with our first system in 1997, TailGauge was
designed specifically as a backup warning system to prevent children from
getting hurt while playing behind cars.

Can TailGauge be installed on
pickup or open bed trucks?
(A special note for pickup truck owners)
Our
backup sensor systems are very popular with pickup truck owners.
Installation is simple. You may either install the power unit directly
behind the rear bumper (in a sealed bag to protect it from the elements,)
or mount it in the rear left taillight assembly. Either way is easy and
effective. For complete instructions on how to install this unit on any
vehicle, including pickup trucks, click here.
Back to Question List.
I
sometimes hook a trailer or boat to my vehicle. Can I turn TailGauge off so
that it does not “sound off” the entire time I am towing?
Not a
problem. A manual on/off switch can be easily installed with all of our
backup warning kits. When you tow, you simply turn it off.
How will the system warn me if I am about to hit something as I back up?
Series
A systems use a recorded voice (instead of a beep) to tell you the
distance from an obstacle. They do not include an LED digital display.
