Ultrasonic Pulse Technology
We use
ultrasonic pulse, and not Doppler, like other systems. This gives TailGauge
better accuracy and reliability than any other backup system on the market.
Doppler
(other systems) picks up only motion. It does not look for objects or
obstacles. If your vehicle is stationary and the object behind your vehicle
is also stationary, these systems will not detect the object at all. The
object will only be detected if either it or the vehicle moves. Once there
is motion, the Doppler radar will show distance. However, with this
technology, even when distance is calculated, the readings are often
inaccurate.
TailGauge, on the other hand, detects objects using the principles of
ultrasonic waves (like bats, which can navigate in the dark). It will detect
any object, moving or not. Because our systems are designed to detect
objects and not motion, they are much more accurate. Our systems are
accurate to approx. 1 - 2".

About Doppler:
With
Doppler technology, the detection field is not focused and thus, one
individual sensor sees everything, both behind the vehicle and on either
side of it, within a range of 180 degrees. However, regardless of the number
of sensors, without the focused beam, the sensors look everywhere; and this
can be problematic. Using this technology, object detection from the side is
almost certain to create false alarm problems in parking garages, and even
on roadways. This is why Doppler, although great for the detection of
clouds, rain and atmospheric movement, is not the best choice for this
application.
Ultrasonic
wave (our technology) uses a focused beam. Three sensors are required in
order to provide even, complete coverage of the entire rear of the vehicle.
*NOTE:
Recently, we have seen a few system designs that use Doppler with two, or
even three, sensors. The performance of these designs seems to be similar to
that of the one-sensor application: not as good as TailGauge.
***A note
about side view detection:
Many
people purchase the Doppler systems in order to provide side view detection,
not realizing that this technology can create false alarms. If you are
looking for side view detection, our Ultrasonic wave system can be
configured to detect objects on either side of your vehicle. And because our
sensors utilize a focused wave (beam), our ultrasonic system does not
‘false’ when used in this application.
